OKLAHOMA CITY, April 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Canadian Great Place to Work Institute has recognized the Calgary-based subsidiary of Devon Energy Corporation (NYSE: DVN) as one of the "Best Workplaces in Canada."

The annual list, published in the Globe & Mail, ranks the independent oil and natural gas producer 20th on the list of 75. Oklahoma City-based Devon is the only energy company in North America to appear on "Great Place to Work" lists in Canada as well as the United States. Devon was included among Fortune magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For" in 2008 and in 2009.

"This is wonderful recognition for our employees," said Chris Seasons, president of Devon's Canadian operations. "All of our people have shown leadership and creativity, particularly in these challenging economic times. Each day, they demonstrate enterprise as well as sensitivity to our communities and the natural environment. Their contributions and their commitment make this company a truly great place to work."

Devon's rank was based primarily on an employee survey conducted by the Great Place to Work Institute. The survey indicates employees take pride in Devon's reputation. It shows camaraderie, teamwork and a small-company atmosphere are prominent. The rank also was based on Devon's corporate culture where employees feel challenged as professionals, have a strong sense of responsibility and can take ownership in the jobs they do.

"To be recognized as a great place to work in Canada and in the United States is a wonderful honor," said Devon Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Larry Nichols. "Throughout the company, we strive to create a great work environment and the best corporate culture in the industry. We cannot count ourselves among North America's premier energy producers without an engaged and motivated employee base."

Devon's Canadian operations focus on exploration and production operations in western and northern Canada. Devon employs about 1,500 people in Canada.

The Great Place to Work(R) Institute Canada was launched in 2005 and is the Canadian affiliate of the U.S.-based Great Place to Work(R) Institute, founded in 1991. It offers services to help companies enhance workplace environments and promote an atmosphere of trust between employees and management.
